When to Plant Cucumbers in Canada 2026 | Zone-by-Zone Guide

When to Plant Cucumbers in Canada 2026

Cucumbers are a warm-season crop β€” they need warm soil and warm nights to thrive. For most Canadian gardeners, that means starting seeds indoors in late April and transplanting after the last frost in late May or June.

Here's exactly when to plant cucumbers across Canadian growing zones in 2026.

Quick Reference: Cucumber Planting Dates by Zone

ZoneProvince/RegionStart IndoorsTransplant Outside
Zone 3Northern AB/SK, northern ONMay 1–7June 1–15
Zone 4Edmonton, WinnipegApril 24 – May 1May 25 – June 7
Zone 5Ottawa, Calgary, BarrieApril 17–24May 22–28
Zone 6Toronto, Hamilton, LondonApril 10–17May 15–22
Zone 7–8Lower Mainland BC, VictoriaMarch 20 – April 7May 1–15

Soil temperature matters more than air temperature for cucumbers. Wait until soil is at least 18Β°C before transplanting. Cold soil stunts growth and increases disease risk.

When to Plant Cucumbers in Ontario

Zone 5b (Ottawa, Kingston, Peterborough): Start cucumbers indoors April 17–24, 2026. Transplant outside May 22–28 β€” two weeks after Ottawa's average last frost of May 8.

Zone 6a (Toronto, Mississauga, Hamilton): Start indoors April 10–17. Toronto's last frost averages April 20, so transplanting outside by May 15–22 is safe.

Zone 6b (Windsor, Leamington, Niagara Peninsula): Start indoors April 3–10. Transplant by May 10–15. This is prime cucumber territory β€” Windsor has the longest growing season in Ontario.

Check the Ontario planting dates page for a full crop-by-crop calendar.

When to Plant Cucumbers in BC

Lower Mainland and Victoria (Zone 7–8): Start indoors late March to early April. Transplant outside after May 1 once nighttime temps stay above 10Β°C. BC gardeners in this zone can also direct sow in late April under row cover.

Interior BC (Kelowna, Kamloops β€” Zone 5b–6a): Start indoors April 10–17. Transplant late May.

See the BC vegetable garden planting guide for more BC-specific timing.

When to Plant Cucumbers in Alberta

Calgary (Zone 4–5): Start indoors April 17–24. Don't transplant before May 25–June 1 β€” Calgary has late surprise frosts and cucumbers are cold-sensitive.

Edmonton (Zone 4): Start indoors April 24 – May 1. Transplant June 1–7 after last frost risk passes.

Should You Direct Sow Cucumbers?

In Zones 6 and warmer (southern Ontario, Lower Mainland BC), you can direct sow cucumbers outdoors after last frost once soil reaches 18Β°C+. Direct sowing avoids transplant shock but delays harvest by 1–2 weeks compared to transplants.

In Zones 3–5, always start indoors β€” the growing season is too short for reliable direct-sow harvests.

How to Start Cucumbers Indoors

  1. Use peat pots or soil blocks β€” cucumbers have sensitive roots that dislike disturbance. Avoid standard plastic cell trays if possible.
  2. Sow 2 seeds per pot, 2 cm deep. Thin to 1 plant after germination.
  3. Germination temperature: 24–29Β°C. Use a heat mat for consistent germination in 5–7 days.
  4. Light: Cucumbers need full sun from day one. Use a grow light or a south-facing window with supplemental lighting in cloudy April conditions.
  5. Harden off for 7–10 days before transplanting β€” start with 1 hour outside and increase gradually.

Cucumber Varieties for Canadian Conditions

For short seasons (Zone 3–4):

  • Bush Pickle (48 days) β€” fast, compact
  • Cool Breeze (48 days) β€” parthenocarpic, sets fruit without pollinators
  • Spacemaster (60 days) β€” reliable bush type

For Zone 5–6:

  • Marketmore 76 (67 days) β€” reliable slicer, disease-resistant
  • Straight Eight (65 days) β€” classic slicer
  • Homemade Pickles (55 days) β€” great for canning

For BC coastal (Zone 7–8):

  • Telegraph (60 days) β€” long English-style slicers
  • Diva (58 days) β€” burpless, no bitterness, good disease resistance

Extending the Cucumber Season

Row covers early: Install floating row cover at transplanting time to warm the soil and protect against cucumber beetles. Remove when flowering begins so pollinators can access flowers.

Vertical growing: Trellised cucumbers yield more in less space, have fewer disease problems, and are easier to harvest. A 180 cm trellis handles most vining types.

Succession planting: In Zone 6+ Ontario and BC, a second sowing 3 weeks after the first extends harvest well into September.

Common Cucumber Problems in Canada

Poor germination: Almost always caused by cold soil. Wait for 18Β°C+ before transplanting, no exceptions.

Bitter cucumbers: Caused by water stress or heat above 32Β°C. Water consistently and mulch heavily to retain moisture.

Powdery mildew in late summer: Common in humid Ontario gardens. Choose resistant varieties (Marketmore 76, Diva) and give plants good airflow by trellising.

Cucumber beetles: A significant pest in Ontario and prairie gardens. Row cover early in the season, remove at flowering, then hand-pick beetles daily.
